Alcohols were initially used as humectants in cosmetics formulations. In recent years, with the increasingly strict laws and regulations on cosmetics preservatives, glycols were discovered and widely used as mild, non-irritating bacteriostatic agents or anti-corrosion synergists. These glycols were not listed as preservatives to limit, making it possible to add cosmetics without preservatives. The bacteriostatic effect of glycols varies greatly due to different hydroxyl positions, and the positions 1 and 2 have better bacteriostatic effect. 1,2-hexanediol and 1,2-pentanediol are classic representatives and popular in the market. 1,2-hexanediol and 1,2-pentanediol have antibacterial activity, high formulation flexibility, and are not affected by hydrolysis, temperature and pH value. They are widely used in wash-free and washable products. It can be used alone or combined with other alternative new preservatives, traditional preservatives and new preservatives, which can play an obvious synergistic effect. It is used as emollient and humectant, which has the effect of moisturizing and moisturizing while preserving the skin, and can improve the skin feeling, warmth, and no irritation of the product.
